Trainer John Sargent has been thrilled with the form displayed by Group 1 winner Kirramosa this time in and is confident the mare can cause serious headaches to the race favourites in Saturday’s featured Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.
Winner of the 2013 edition of the Crown Oaks, Kirramosa returned this time for a credible fifth in the Fairfield RSL Club BM90 (1200m) but undoubtedly stamped her claims as one to watch through the Spring Carnival when savaging the line for fifth in the talent-rich Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago.
Sure to relish a step-up to a mile for the 2015 George Main Stakes, Sargent told The Daily Telegraph he believes the Alamosa mare has returned to racing in career-best form and is capable of a cheeky performance on Saturday – her final point of call before the featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick in a fortnight.
“She was just starting to come good going into that run,” Sargent said of the Tramway Stakes.
“She’s getting back to somewhere near her best and even though at weight-for-age she’s up against it this weekend, she’ll run a nice race off what she did this morning.
“She got 52kgs in the Epsom Handicap and should get a run so that’ll be her first target.
“Maybe the Caulfield Cup isn’t out of the question either. She had plenty of ground work going into her first-up run this time in and is starting to peak at the right time.
“Certainly if she ran a good race in the Epsom and pulled up well we’d look at taking her to Melbourne.
“She’s won a Group 1 going anticlockwise and that’s an important factor when you’re thinking of heading south.”
The 2015 George Main Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Wednesday).
