A talented list of 14 runners have been included in nominations for Saturday’s featured 2015 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the pending appearance of several previous winners at the highest level.
Kermadec has returned to slick form through two starts this time and has been included in nominations for his return to Group 1 company in the 2015 George Main Stakes.
Kermadec returned to racing this year for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m); progressing to this in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) before a luckless run for fourth when blocked late in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 7th.
Running on for third amongst open company in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on March 21st, the Teofilo entire capped his preparation in the best way possible when taking out the major Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of The Championships.
Having run fifth in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and second in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) this time, Kermadec is a leading chance for success at Randwick this weekend.
Chris Waller is set to launch a multi-pronged attack in Saturday’s feature race after also including Royal Descent, Moriarty and Flamingo Star in George Main Stakes nominations.
Consistent mare Royal Descent finished second in the 2014 edition of the George Main Stakes, but has arguably returned to racing in better condition this year.
Posting five wins and thirteen minors through 27 career starts so far, Royal Descent returned this time for success in the Warwick Stakes before running on for a credible third despite being blocked in the Chelmsford Stakes.
Moriarty will be suited to races at distances of 2000m or more this time, but will have taken plenty of benefit from his two starts this time leading into the George Main Stakes.
German import Flamingo Star has form around some of the world’s standout thoroughbreds, and while unable to figure when 12th in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) first-up, will relish a return to his pet distance of a mile.
Lucia Valentina arguably had the run of the race in the Tramway Stakes despite finishing sixth, and will also benefit from a step-up to a mile this weekend.
A two-time Group 1 winner, Lucia Valentina was unable to reach her full potential through the recent Autumn Carnival, but is clearly in far-better shape leading into her Spring Carnival targets.
Godolphin Australia are also set to field plenty of experience at Randwick on Saturday after included all of It’s Somewhat, Sweynesse, Hauraki and Magic Hurricane in nominations.
The 2015 George Main Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed by midday, Wednesday.
