Sacred Falls wins 2014 George Main Stakes

September 20th, 2014

Talented miler Sacred Falls has continued his strong affiliation with 1600m races this afternoon, charging home to win the featured Group 1 George Main Stakes at Royal Randwick ahead of classy mare Royal Descent and a brave Laser Hawk.

Jumping from the gates well, the O’reilly entire settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Laser Hawk, classy three-year-old Panzer Division and Rising Romance, who set a noticeably quick tempo down the back straight and rounding the bend.

Appearing to be blocked for a run upon reaching the final straight, jockey Zac Purton steered the five-year-old through to field and found the head of the pack, finishing a length in the clear of his stable mate.

Trainer Chris Waller was understandably pleased with Sacred Falls’ victory in the 2014 George Main Stakes, particularly in what was his first Australian Group 1 victory on a firm racing surface.

“He’s a very good horse and it was good to see him win today on a good track; he’s not just a wet-tracker,” Waller said.

“Prior to coming to me he won a Group 1 in New Zealand on a pretty firm track and it was good to show Australia that he’s not a wet-tracker, as simple as that.

“So that’s his fourth Group 1 win, all at a mile and what more can you ask, it’s just good when a plan comes off, he’s been set for the race.”

Zac Purton offered up an exceptional ride on Sacred Falls in the 2014 George Main Stakes, and was thrilled to continue the winning partnership into the Spring Carnival.

“He’s a terrific horse, Chris has done a great job with him and he loves the mile here, so full credit to him,” Purton said after crossing the line.

“Around the world I’ve been going really well, so it’s good to get them back home here now.

“I didn’t have to worry about anything, I knew Chris would get him right, he’s building up to this race and it was just a matter of getting the right run and we did that.”

Yet to be confirmed for a specific path beyond this afternoon’s George Main Stakes triumph, Sacred Falls has been included in nominations for both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
