After a close second in the race last year the Chris Waller-trained Royal Descent is the headline nominee for the George Main Stakes 2014 in Sydney this Saturday.
Twelve months ago during last year’s Sydney Spring Racing Carnival Waller saddled up four of the nine runners in the $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick including second past the post Royal Descent.
The 2013 Australian Oaks winning mare was narrowly defeated by the since retired Streama and is back in 2014 looking to go one better in the weight-for-age classic.
George Main Stakes nominations have been extended until tomorrow morning after 12 early entries were taken by Racing NSW today.
Four of those come from Waller’s four time Sydney premiership winning stables, the quartet all coming via a run in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at the track form September 6.
In that race Waller enjoyed an extremely rare training feat, the master horseman preparing the first six over the line including runner-up Royal Descent.
The Redoute’s Choice mare was also runner-up in her first-up run the start before behind Tiger Tees in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).
Waller’s Chelsmford Stakes winner, former Queensland Derby champ Hawkspur meanwhile also backs up in the George Main and will be challenging for favouritism with his stable mate when the field is out on Wednesday and the markets go up at Ladbrokes.com.au.
The other Chelsmford Stakes runners for Waller nominated for the George Main meanwhile are veteran eight-year-old Bagman (3rd), dual Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Falls (4th) and Moriarty (5th).
The other headline nominee for the Sydney feature on the weekend meanwhile is the Kris Lees-trained Lucia Valentina.
The Group 1 winning Savabeel mare returned to racing on Chelmsford Day and like Hawkspur enjoyed a nice lead-up win defeating Tiger Tees in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m).
Another last start winner sure to be well placed in George Main Stakes betting this year is then three-year-old Panzer Division for Paul Messara.
Connections opted not to run the Redoute’s Choice colt in last Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) and instead the last start Group 3 Ming Dynasty winner will take on the older horses this weekend.
Also in the mix are then ATC Oaks winner Rising Romance who ran fourth in the Tramway first-up and the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Toydini previously prepared by last year’s George Main winning trainer the late Guy Walter.
