Boban Likely 2014 George Main Stakes Contestant

August 12th, 2014

Arguably the best performer in last weekend’s Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick despite finishing fourth, trainer Chris Waller has revealed Group 1 champion Boban will target major weight-for-age events over a mile through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, including the Group 1 George Main Stakes on September 20th.

A standout performer through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Boban secured a perfect record of five wins from as many starts, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and Group 1 Emirates Stakes; both over a mile.

Unable to settle in the gates before jumping in the Missile Stakes, jockey Glyn Schofield said the Bernardini gelding was very unlucky not to secure the race win on Saturday, but has returned to racing in exceptional form.

“He was propping in the barriers and the starter wasn’t happy to wait much longer and let us go when we weren’t ready,” Schofield told AAP.

“He didn’t give us the opportunity to start on level terms because we were on our back legs.

“At that distance and tempo he was too far out of his ground to win.”

Returning at the beginning of the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival for fifth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on February 8th, Boban appeared to be lacking top gear when fourth in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) a fortnight later, however returned to the winner’s circle with an impressive victory over his pet distance of 1600m in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes on March 8th.

Unable to figure when beating just a single runner home in the major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at the conclusion of his autumn preparation, Waller said the weight-for-age events over a mile pose the perfect targets for Boban this spring.

“Boban bled in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes so we are going to take him along quietly and keep him to races up to a mile,” Waller said.

“He will probably target the weight-for-age miles and might need a couple of runs to find his best.”
